Preventing Winter Weight Gain
All the tasty and heavy meals, as well as the cold and lack of motivation to get outside can often lead to some excess weight gain, try these strategies to help prevent this during the cooler months:
Extra Tips and Examples:
Swap your regular hot chocolate with a low calorie option (Avalanche 99% sugar free is a tasty option)
Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables
Maintain regular exercise
Start a class, team sport or program to keep you feeling motivated
Set aside some time at the beginning of the week for exercise
Take opportunities to walk e.g. use the stairs
Seek lower calorie winter desserts e.g. stew or bake apples, plums or frozen berries and serve them with yoghurt (high protein, lower fat options)
Use mashed pumpkin or sweet potato in stead of pastry on pies
Instead of rice try cabbage
Swap hot potato chips for sweet potato wedges
Layer lasagna with thinly cut vegetable slices e.g. zucchini and/or eggplant
Be mindful of portion sizes and what you are eating, try eating meals at a table rather than in front of a television
Make soups based off tinned tomatoes and onion and pack with lots of vegetables (rather than heavy/creamy soups)
Try a warm salad:
Use lentils
Use roasted vegetables
Add herbs and spices
