Why is iron important?

Iron is an important mineral that is involved in a range of bodily functions. It helps to transport oxygen around the body, making iron essential for life!

Iron is also important for optimal immune function, providing energy and storing oxygen in our muscles.

Who is at risk of deficiency?

One in 8 people aged 2 years and over does not consume enough iron on average to meet their needs. Certain groups of people are at greater risk of iron deficiency. Some of these people include:

  • Teenage girls

  • Menstruating women

  • Pregnant women

  • Athletes in training

  • People who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet

  • People who have a lower than normal ability to absorb or use iron, such as someone with coeliac disease

  • People with chronic diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, heart failure or kidney disease.

5 ways to boost your Iron intake:

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you boost your iron:

  1. Add Vitamin C rich foods to your meals to increase Iron absorption

  2. Avoid consuming caffeine and dairy products during or directly after having a source of iron as this can work to inhibit absorption.

  3. Pair your iron supplement with Vitamin C (e.g. Fruit juice)

  4. Include iron fortified foods such as cereals and breads in your diet

  5. Consume Haem and Non-Haem Iron foods to increase Non-haem iron absorption.
