PCOS - Facts and Symptoms

What is PCOS-Insulin Resistance?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a complex disorder that has several aspects in terms of pathology including metabolic, endocrine, reproductive and psychological. PCOS affects between 12-18% of Australian women, there is not one clear diagnostic tool and should be an individualised approach.

Did you know 80% of women with PCOS also are diagnosed with Insulin Resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, when we eat foods containing carbohydrate they are broken down to glucose in the blood. Insulin’s role is to transfer glucose from the blood into the liver and muscle cells, to be used as energy and manage our blood glucose levels. In people with insulin resistance, the muscles and the liver resist the action of insulin so the body has to produce higher amounts to keep the blood glucose levels within normal range.

Weight loss difficulty

In most people with insulin resistance, it is also difficult to lose weight as excess amounts of insulin gets stored as fat particularly around the abdominal area putting you at risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

While some of these symptoms can be self-diagnosed, a lot of them require a medical diagnosis. Once diagnosed we can help you elevate and potentially eliminate some of these symptoms.
