Around 80% of women with PCOS have a condition called Insulin Resistance (IR). The condition involves the detection of blood sugar levels in the blood by the pancreas, and the release of a hormone called Insulin when these blood sugar levels increase. When we eat foods containing carbohydrate, the carbohydrates are broken down into glucose (sugar) and enter the blood.

Insulin’s role is to transfer sugar from the blood into the liver and muscle cells, to be used as energy and manage our blood sugar levels. In cases of Insulin Resistance, the muscles and liver resist this action of insulin, and the body’s response is to overcompensate for this resistance by increasing insulin production in order to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

With the release of our new UNIQUE PCOS & Insulin Resistance online program, we aim to help aid individual understanding and education about both of these conditions, and the supplementation evidence involved. Including our recommended supplement suggestions and favourite brands.

Help me Understand

Here is an analogy to better understand Insulin Resistance: insulin is your “Uber” driver and glucose is your “passenger”. The more passengers you have (carbohydrates you eat) the more Uber drivers you will need. Your destination (muscles and liver) are refusing entry (insulin resistance) for your Uber driver’s. Therefore they do not know where to go or what to do, so they park up and store as “fat”.
